Nourishing the
Mind and Body

DMZ Manna is a not-for-profit organization founded by Staff Sergeant Dean McKenzie, a 20-year veteran of the United States Army. Staff Sergeant McKenzie returned home from a deployment in Afghanistan during the height of the COVID pandemic. Still, in service mode, he started to brainstorm ways to directly assist those affected by job loss and food shortages created by the pandemic.

Fortunately, his military career has provided many opportunities to witness first-hand how lending assistance can completely change the trajectory of a person’s life. Falling back on his boots-on-ground mentality, he started volunteering with a few local organizations which provided hot meals to the community. Although happy to be of service, his focus shifted to a more long-term and permanent solution to mitigate hunger in our communities. As a result, DMZ Manna was born.

Our mission

It is our mission to end hunger and empower people to improve their socioeconomic status, by addressing issues that contribute and lead to poverty. While providing meals and pantry items is important and a major part of our program, we realize that we must take a multifaceted approach to achieve long-term success.

Our Approach

Step One

The first step is to meet the individual’s immediate need. Let’s face it, it would be difficult for any of us to focus on the future if we struggle to feed ourselves and our families today. So, the first step is to eliminate the threat of food insecurity by providing a consistent source to obtain meals and pantry items on demand.

Step Two

The next step is to address the root causes of hunger by providing services and partnering with organizations that provide critical services like job training programs and health care. In-house, we provide job training skills, resume writing services, interview preparation, and professional clothing needed to help secure a job.

Step Three

Finally, we teach basic life skills that a lot of us might take for granted. Creating and following a budget, getting a bank account, learning about the importance of credit and how to maintain it, as well have tax preparation and planning services.

Our Community is calling, let’s help them.
